Drunk Driver Strikes 50 Year-old Female Pedestrian

On February 15, 2013, an impaired driver operating his vehicle while under the influence of drugs struck a pedestrian. The 46 year-old male struck the pedestrian around 5:50 PM near Oddstad Boulevard in Pacifica. The accident occurred when the male was heading southbound on Oddstad Boulevard and crossed into the northbound lanes hitting a 50 year-old woman.

The impact sent the woman flying and the male driver then crashed into two parked cars. Officials who were responding to the accident reported that the driver smelled of alcohol and admitted to having drank prior of the accident. The victim suffered a laceration to the head and other injuries. As a result, she was taken to the San Francisco hospital to receive treatment.

The Dangers of Drunk Driving

Unfortunately, drunk driving is a common occurrence on our roads today that leaves many people injured. Drunk driving is extremely dangerous as it impairs the brain of the driver. Alcohol causes numerous affects including:

·         Slows the brain’s functions so the driver is unable to respond to situations or make decisions quickly
·         Reduces ability to judge how fast the driver is moving
·         Reduces judgment so the driver is unable to judge distance from other cars, people, or objects
·         Gives drivers false sense of confidence so they take greater risks
·         Makes it difficult for drivers to multitask so they can only focus on one thing. As a result, they may miss seeing traffic lights or pedestrians
·         May make the driver sleepy so they may fall asleep behind the wheel and cause an accident

Driving truly impairs the mind of a driver, causing the driver to become a threat to others on the road. It is estimated that one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related car accident.

Three Hurt in Head-On Collision in Pomona

On the morning of April 28, 2013, a car accident occurred that left three people hospitalized. The accident occurred around 10:45 PM in Pomona, California near Harrison and Bonita avenues. The collision happened when a woman was heading southbound on Town Avenue. Unfortunately, the woman lost control of her vehicle. As a result, her son tried to take control of the steering wheel, but sideswiped another vehicle before crossing the center median and heading into oncoming traffic.

The SUV that the woman and son were driving collided into another SUV. Firefighters were forced to cut open the other SUV containing a male in his late 30’s. The man was flown by helicopter to a nearby center for his injuries. The female driver was also taken to the hospital for injuries while her son only suffered minor injuries. According to officials, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Head-On Collision and Injuries

Unfortunately, numerous incidents similar to the story told above occur every day. Head-on collisions are one of the most dangerous types of accidents as they have the strongest force of impact. If both cars are traveling at a rate of 50 mph, when the cars meet they slam at 100 mph. As a result, injuries resulting from a head-on collision can be most devastating.

Head-on collisions may sound rare, but they occur quite commonly. Many head-on collisions take place when an impaired driver is operating their vehicle under the influence of alcohol. As a result, many drunk drivers will enter the freeway through the exit ramp and head towards oncoming traffic. Often times, it is too late and the drunk driver slams into an unsuspecting driver causing severe injury. Other times, head-on collisions can occur due to a brief momentary loss of control. Just a split second can send the driver and nearby motorists into harm’s way.
